The Dr. Valinda Nwadike Scholarship for Medical Students has announced its annual call for applications, targeting undergraduate students across the United States who are dedicated to careers in medicine or allied health fields and focused on reducing health disparities, particularly in maternal health, rural areas, and underserved populations.
Established by Dr. Valinda Nwadike, MD, MPH, the scholarship aims to support emerging healthcare professionals who show academic promise and a clear vision for tackling systemic gaps in care. Dr. Nwadike, a physician, educator, and maternal health advocate, has built her career around high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic surgery, academic mentorship, and telehealth innovation. Her work includes leading the Southern Maryland Black Maternal Telehealth Alliance, which expands access to prenatal and postpartum care.
The scholarship is open to undergraduate students enrolled in accredited U.S. programs, including community colleges, four-year institutions, and online programs. Applicants must be pursuing a healthcare-related career, such as pre-med, pre-PA, nursing, pre-dental, or public health with clinical intent. The selection process does not require transcripts, recommendation letters, or financial documentation; instead, it relies on an original essay of 600 to 800 words.
The essay prompt asks students to reflect on how future medical professionals can use education, technology, or community partnerships to close gaps in care for underserved populations, drawing on experiences with health disparities. Dr. Nwadike emphasizes that medicine must consider the whole person, including their zip code, fears, and strength. Essays are evaluated on a 100-point scale based on personal insight, feasibility of proposed solutions, alignment with Dr. Nwadike's mission, and writing quality.
The scholarship awards a one-time $1,000 prize. Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2027, via email to apply@drvalindanwadikescholarship.com with the subject line "Nwadike Scholarship – [Full Name] – [University Name]" and the essay attached in .docx, .pdf, or email body format. The winner will be announced on February 15, 2027.
This initiative underscores the growing need to address maternal health disparities in the United States, where Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By investing in students who are committed to equity, the scholarship aims to cultivate a new generation of clinicians who will prioritize culturally competent care and innovative solutions for underserved communities.
Dr. Valinda Nwadike, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University, has held clinical leadership roles across multiple states. Through this scholarship, she continues her mission of influencing maternal healthcare through education, mentorship, and telehealth innovation, ensuring that future physicians are equipped to address the social, geographic, and economic factors that affect patient outcomes.
