Dr. Bradley A. Maron Appointed Editor-in-Chief of Circulation, Signaling New Era for Cardiovascular Journal

The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association's flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, takes the helm effective with today's issue. He succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, editor-in-chief from 2004-2016.

Maron's appointment underscores the Association's commitment to advancing transformative science, according to Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee. Maron brings extensive experience as senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His research bridges basic, translational, clinical, and population health, focusing on pulmonary vascular disease and its impact on the heart. He has co-authored more than 260 scientific publications and holds six patents.

In his new role, Maron aims to reinvigorate the type of science published in Circulation and fast-track information to readers with additional transparency. Key new features include a Clinician Lighthouse article series for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician's Corner for real-world clinical decision-making, and graphic abstracts for all research articles. The journal will also introduce video commentaries, a streamlined submission process with accelerated review timelines, and a Patient's Corner article series for the public. Expanded weekly eTable of Contents alerts with brief summaries will also be implemented.

Maron is joined by a new editorial team including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections, including Fundamental Sciences (Joseph C. Wu), Translational Science (Matthew L. Steinhauser), Clinical Cardiology (Jennifer E. Ho and Ryan J. Tedford), Clinical Trials (Adrian F. Hernandez and P. Gabriel Steg), Community Health (Tiffany Powell-Wiley), Population Health (Mercedes Carnethon), Global Cardiovascular Health (Ana Mocumbi), and AI for Process and Science (Thomas M. Maddox).

Circulation is part of the American Heart Association's portfolio of 14 peer-reviewed journals, each editorially independent to support open dialogue and scientific discourse. The Association receives more than 85% of its revenue from non-corporate sources, with strict policies to prevent donations from influencing science content. Overall financial information is available here. Additional resources, including photos, can be accessed in the news release.
